Do you own a 2001, 2002 or 2003 automatic Toyota RAV4? Having transmission (gear box) shifting problems? Erratic problems? Power loss? Is transmission slipping? Read on. More Information:

The ECMs of these RAV4 models are failing with time, and as a result of this failure, the transmission starts slipping (mostly from second to third gear) and showing other shifting problems, like starting in third gear instead of first gear, making it sluggish when it is accelerated. RPMs go up and the vehicle barely starts to move. This is among many other symptoms.

If this situation is not solved on time, the transmission will suffer an internal failure, making the problem worse and a lot more expensive to fix. Like if it wasn't enough, owners even have reported having minor accidents because of the malfunction of the vehicle while having this issue. Citing the words of one of our customers before we serviced his ECM, "lately, this is been kind of a dangerous car...".

This issue will only be solved by either (1) replacing the ECM computer by a new one (good, but very expensive), or (2) by sending us your current ECM for repairing it (better and not expensive). A reprogramming job alone will NOT, I repeat, will NOT solve the problem, as suggested by many dealers.

If you decide to replace your ECM, a new ECM will cost from $800 to $1300. If you get an used ECM, it will be prone to fail for the same issues, unless PROPERLY repaired and if it has the immobilizer security system enabled, it must be programmed first, before you can use it in your car. Otherwise, the engine will not start.

Q. What are these chips and what they do?

A. These chips are memory devices called EPROM. They contain and hold the program that will be run in your car's computer. These chips, are modified on their program code so the engine can deliver more horsepower and torque than it currently would with the factory program.

Q. Are these chips vehicle or application specific?

A. Yes. They will only work with the models or applications listed here. Using otherwise, either won't work or might be unsafe.

Q. How can I identify my computer?

A. To identify your computer (ecu), you must look at the computer's top cover label. The number should be similar to the following format:

Because of the last three numbers, it is called the "413" ecu. To help locating your computer, please refer to the above illustration. It is located bellow the passenger side wiper assembly, on the engine bay (under the hood).

Immobilizer reset. This is a virgin dump for the ECM of the 2001 - 2003 Toyota RAV4.

What is this? - This is the software (code) that goes inside the immobilizer chip, located in the ECM, for resetting the Immobilizer system (security), so the vehicle accepts your current, used or new keys. Once you write this code in the immonilizer EEPROM chip (25080), it will be in auto reguster mode, where it will register the keys you have for starting the engine. This file will be instantly available for downloading after the purchase is made.

Will this fix the transmission problems of these models? - No, this will make the ecm ready to start with your keys if it was repaired, remanufactured, sourced from a recycler, junkyard or any other source like eBay.  Instructions are included in the download.

For using this, you will need an EEPROM programmer and an SMD SOIC-8 clip for writing the EEPROM either in-circuit or off-circuit. The EEPROM programmer can be any inexpensive type, able to accept serial EEPROMs like the 93c56, 93c66, 24c02, 25020, 25080, etc. and the clip is sold by the 3M Company and the Pomona Company, with a cost around $15.

NOTE: If you are going to do only one vehicle or if you don't have the hardware or tools needed as explained in this page, then we have a much more economical way. 2001-2003 Toyota RAV4 Immobilizer Virgin EEPROM

The clip is known as an SMD SOIC-8 clip and can be acquired at online electronic catalogs like Digikey.com. The target EEPROM on this case is the 25080 EEPROM.



You take out the ECM from your vehicle, open it, locate the small 8-legged (pins) chip and reprogram it by writing the included code and then you are ready to reinstall the ECM back in your vehicle and drive it with your existing old, used or new keys. No soldering/desoldering needed. That is the purpose of using the SOIC-8 clip. This code can be used as many times as you wish, as the EEPROM is completely re-programmable and also you can do this on as many vehicles as you wish, making it ideal for selling the service of clearing or resetting the 2001 - 2003 RAV4 ECM.



This includes the code for programming the chip and general instructions. Programmer and clip are not included. Please note that this package is intended for technical personnel.

What is the immobilizer? The immobilizer is a circuit installed in most modern cars as a theft deterrent. For this purpose, it matches an unique code stored in a very small chip inserted in the key, with a code that was previously written in the ecu. If the code doesn't match, the car engine either won't start or will start for a second an a half and will immediately die.

As you may guess, when keys are lost, the car won't start even with a perfect copy of the key, as the code in its chip is unique.

There is when immo killer comes in. It will help in reprogramming the car's ecu so it will work with any key that turns the cylinder.

Great for troubleshooting too. Temporally eliminating the immobilizer with immo killer, will allow you to know if the car is not starting because of the immobilizer itself or for any other problem. This will turn in huge money saving by eliminating the guessing and providing real results!

This software will run on any x86 PC computer, but we recommend a minimum of Pentium II 133Mhz, running Windows 2000 / XP, 256 MB RAM, 30 MB Hard disk space and a monitor capable of a resolution of 1024x768 pixels.
